Gwanghwamun·Deoksugung

The King Sejong statue, Gwanghwamun Square, and Deoksugung sit within one block—the heart of downtown Seoul. City Hall, government buildings, history, and events overlap, making it the busiest area in the country by foot traffic.

History & background

Gwanghwamun was the main gate of Gyeongbokgung in the Joseon period; Deoksugung was the royal palace of the Korean Empire. Since the 2000s creation of Gwanghwamun Square and expanded vehicle-free sections, it has been used for walking, gatherings, and tourism.

Why it's famous

Commuting, tourism, protests, festivals, and night walks overlap, so the area is crowded 24 hours. The King Sejong statue, City Hall, and Deoksugung are must-see spots, and real-time population is always among the highest.
